Professional Standards

Our Registered Members must meet the following standards:

  • Hold a Diploma of Shiatsu and Oriental Therapies
    HLT50202, HLT50207, HLT50212 or HLT52215 - includes a minimum 200 hours in person supervised clinical training.
  • Obtain either Basic Emergency Life Support certification (HLTAID010) or First Aid (HLTAID011) and CPR (HLTAID009) renewed every 3 years.
  • Professional indemnity insurance to the value of $2 million
  • Public liability insurance to the value of $20 million
  • Undertake a minimum of 20 points of Continued Professional Education annually

STAA's Policy and Guidelines 

All Registered members of STAA must agree to abide by our Code of Standards and Ethics as featured in the Policy and Guidelines Handbook.

The National Code of Conduct for unregistered health professionals is in place in Australia. This National Code applies to shiatsu therapists.

The STAA code of standards and ethics covers:

  • Hygiene
  • Confidentiality
  • Patient records
  • Advertising
  • Stationery
  • Complaints and Handling Procedures
  • Breach of Code of Standards and Ethics.

Members are required to sign a declaration that they will abide by these Code of Ethics.


Complaints can also be made to the Health Complaints Commission


Established in 1987, the Shiatsu Therapy Association of Australia Inc. (STAA) is the National Peak Body representing Shiatsu Therapists.

STAA is dedicated to expanding the awareness and recognition of Shiatsu in the Australian community and its integration into the healthcare system.
